Outline - of Program

This is an introductory level course designed for individuals, government, corporate and volunteer organisations who are considering engaging in Search and Rescue (SAR) activities using unmanned aircraft systems and would benefit from initial training and awareness The course will provide introductory level skills and knowledge to allow responders to understand the benefits and methods of utilising unmanned aircraft for SAR.

Expert drone search and rescue instructors will provide practical and theoretical instruction in aerial search and rescue missions. Students will learn the fundamentals of conducting SAR missions using drones under a variety of operational conditions.

Introduction to Drones for Search and Rescue

At the completion of this lesson students will understand the common use, benefits and limitations for using drones in Search and Rescue

Pre-Flight Search and Rescue

At the completion of this lesson students will understand how to plan and prepare for a drone Search and Rescue operation using available information.

Aerial Search Patterns

At the completion of this lesson students will understand the different types of search patterns that can be utilised by drones and how to apply them.

  • Types of Aerial Search Patterns
  • Aerial payload delivery

Coordination and Execution

At the completion of this lesson students will understand requirements for conducting a drone based Search and Rescue operation.

  • Coordination with other SAR services
  • Communication procedures

Practical- Details of Each Session

Pre-flight Checks

At the completion of this lesson students will be able to demonstrate the preflight checks and documentation requirements for night SAR operations.

  • Prepare personal equipment

  • Conduct risk assessment
  • Complete checklists and preflight documentation

Flying search patterns - open area

At the completion of this lesson students will be exposed to the skills required for flying search patterns for SAR operations in an open area.

  • Manual search pattern flying
  • Automatic search pattern flying

Payload deployment - open area

At the completion of this lesson students will be exposed to the skills required for payload deployment during SAR operations in an open area.

  • Target location
  • Hover over target
  • Release payload to target

Demonstration of Live streaming of vision

At the completion of this lesson students will understand the following:

  • Benefits and limitations of live streaming
  • Using live streaming vision for actionable intelligence
  • Using live streaming for command decisions

Post-flight Checks

At the completion of this lesson students will be able to demonstrate the post flight checks and documentation requirements for SAR operations.
